چکیده

Virtual worlds like World of Warcraft and Second Life are slowly becoming recognized by researchers as ideal testing grounds for their theories. The unprecedented control over the world’s dynamics and the easy access to its data make them ideal for observation and controlled experiments. Do results from these worlds, however, have bearing on the physical world? While the agents in these worlds are indeed controlled by humans, the characteristics of these worlds differ from the physical world in many ways, not the least of which is in physics. One way to begin to answer this question is to analyze the behavior of bidders and sellers in virtual currency auctions. Specifically, this paper examines auctions in World of Warcraft and argues that buyers and sellers both value the game’s currency and price items consistently. The paper then briefly explains why the auction mechanism differs from eBay’s enough to render useless the techniques employed to analyze eBay auctions, and it concludes with a justification of why researchers should pay more attention to virtual worlds.

The Impact of Information Diffusion on Bidding Behavior in Secret Reserve Price Auctions

T interactive nature of the Internet promotes collaborative business models (e.g., auctions) and facilitates information-sharing via social networks. In Internet auctions, an important design option for sellers is the setting of a secret reserve price that has to be met by a buyer’s bid for a successful purchase. Bidders have strong incentives to learn more about the secret reserve price in the...

STATISTICAL METHODS IN ECOMMERCE RESEARCH Chapter: Differential Equation Trees to Model Price Dynamics in Online Auctions

1.1 INTRODUCTION Empirical research of online auctions has been growing steadily in the last several years. Online auctions are different from offline auctions in several important ways: They are usually much longer, bidders and sellers are anonymous, and the barriers of entry are much lower for both bidders and sellers. These differences lead to auction dynamics that can be very different from...

Revenue Comparison of Discrete Private-Value Auctions via Weak Dominance∗

We employ weak dominance to analyze both first-price and second-price auctions under the discrete private-value setting. We provide a condition under which the expected revenue from second-price auction is higher than that of first-price auction. We also provide implications for large auctions, including the “virtual” revenue equivalence.

Evolutionary dynamics of biological auctions.

Many scenarios in the living world, where individual organisms compete for winning positions (or resources), have properties of auctions. Here we study the evolution of bids in biological auctions. For each auction, n individuals are drawn at random from a population of size N. Each individual makes a bid which entails a cost. The winner obtains a benefit of a certain value. Costs and benefits ...

Price formation and its dynamics in online auctions

This research uses functional data modeling to study the price formation process in online auctions. It conceptualizes the price evolution and its first and second derivatives (velocity and acceleration respectively) as the primary objects of interest. Together these three functional objects permit us to talk about the dynamics of an auction, and how the influence of different factors vary thro...
